Grab your bouncy balls, paint, and paper and let’s explore open-ended messy art today! Bouncy ball art is so much fun! Our invitation to paint and play is messy, encourages movement, and is a great sensory experience. Trust me though, this mess is so worth it! Who needs a paintbrush when you have bouncy balls! It’s bounce, bounce, bounce time!
Materials Needed:
- Bouncy Balls
- Washable Tempura Paint
- Compartment Tray
- Paper
- Tape
What’s Next:
Cover your work surface. We used a large tarp and a piece of plywood. I tried placing the paper in a large cardboard box, but there was no bounce effect. Plus, it’s messier and fun to chase the balls! Tape your paper down to a hard surface. Encourage your child to choose and name each color. Once your work space is all prepped, it’s BOUNCE time! Simply dip and bounce!
C started off small, just rolling the balls in the paint and bouncing the balls lightly. His expressions are priceless!
Bounce! Bounce! Bounce! It’s really hard to capture a bouncing ball!
C switched it up and started rolling them too. I love watching him explore materials and play!
Even Thomas & Friends joined in the messy play!
Watch out those bouncy balls are slippery! They kept rolling under his feet. Ow, even your feet get messy — fun! He finally got ahold of that silly ball!
Our invitation to paint and play was so much fun! What are some of your favorite messy activities?
Here’s a few of our favorite process art and movement activities:
Yarn Pom Pom Drumstick Painting

Hi Kierna. Thanks! It was super messy fun. Yes, agreed outside is best. 😉 We tried it in a large cardboard box but the balls didn’t bounce. The tray idea sounds fun!

This is so much fun! I’ve done this sort of thing with rocks and marbles, but I love the idea of letting the kids use a bouncy ball and bouncing it. They’d love it, too! I was also thinking it might be fun to use beach balls…though that could get REALLY messy!
